Pets For The Elderly

 Pets For The Elderly

Being elderly is a lonely state,

Especially when you’ve outlived your mate.

Children have grown up, gone separate ways,

And when they do visit, it’s for a few days.

The walls close in – you don’t go far.

‘Cause you’ve lost the right to drive a car.

You feel downhearted – alone – but I bet

You’d feel much better, if you got a pet.

Mine is a dog, a husky, Missy’s her name.

Since she came, my life’s not been the same.

Paw prints to wipe after she’s been on her rope

But not so much that I can’t cope.

There’s so much expression in those eyes of blue

As she looks at her plate, the stove, and then you!

She has no problem when she wants to communicate,

Even let’s you know she thinks you’re first-rate.

She’ll press her head on your leg to give you a hug.

So what if there’s a few hairs on the rug?

Small price to pay for the company she gives,

Enriching the way that the both of you lives.

So instead of sitting here like a bump on a log,

Thank Heaven, for sending me the love of a dog.
